Beginner Boat Building

Back in July I was perusing the selection of magazines at Borders when I stumbled on to the August issue of WoodenBoat magazine. The issue caught my eye because of the image shown here. This wheelbarrow pram is the perfect design for a project I've been meaning to do for quite a while now. My parents in Idaho own some property with fishing ponds. They've been meaning to buy some kind of a rowboat, but haven't been able to find one to meet their specifications. I plan on building this boat with a few customized modifications, and if things go smoothly I might have it finished by Christmas.
I will need to slightly alter the original designs that were included in the magazine (below), but it shouldn't be anything too difficult. In preparation for the project I've been attending all the wood/metal shop demos offered to the product design sophomores at Otis College where I am getting a degree in the digital media program. It is refreshing to step away from the computer and do some projects that involve a little more sweat. This project should provide some much needed diversion and balance throughout this semester.
I will be in Idaho this weekend and hope to get a few photos of the fish ponds and surrounding area to help influence the design/build of the boat.
